Reception — Not for Sale: Barter Exchange

  • Harold J. Miossi Art Gallery, Cuesta College (map)

This summer, the Harold J. Miossi Art Gallery becomes a marketplace where visitors transform into patrons and sales become trades and stories of connection. Featuring more than 30 artists from across California, Not for Sale imagines an economy built on exchange, where artwork inspires participation and builds community.

Inspired by Ed Kienholz's 1969 exhibition Watercolors, in which each painting featured text describing the exchange the artist was after, a chainsaw, a fur coat, nine screwdrivers, this show invites artists to offer their work in trade rather than for sale. Every artwork names its own barter: a skill, an object, an experience, or something else entirely. Patrons who have what an artist wants can make the exchange, and the work finds its way into the community without a dollar changing hands.

Join us opening night, and come back all summer as the trades unfold and the story grows.
