Meet Our Directors

  • Riki Schumacher

    PRESIDENT

Art has always been an important part of Riki’s life. She acquired a communications degree studying graphics, photography, and printing. After graduation, she lived in Alaska, cutting her teeth on print shop graphics and the printing industry. While living in LA, she had a career in radio advertising. Advertising sales and management provided her with invaluable business experience. She has dealt with customers and co-workers and learned the importance of developing relationships. Riki and her husband spent many years as snowbirds, traveling to and from Washington state to San Luis Obispo. Their long-term plan was successful, and they permanently moved to SLO in 2019.

Today, Riki is an oil painter passionate about creating serene, contemporary landscapes. She is glad to support the local arts by bringing more awareness, fun, and entertainment to the community through the arts.

  • Jonathan York

    VICE PRESIDENT

Jonathan York, Professor Emeritus of Entrepreneurship at Cal Poly, has enjoyed the vibrant landscape of San Luis Obispo for 15 years, immersing himself in the startup and tech communities. At Cal Poly, Jon co-founded both the Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship and the SLO Hothouse and leveraged his expertise to develop a robust entrepreneurial scene on campus as well.

Before his time at Cal Poly, Jon led a varied career, ranging from CEO of large mental health and substance abuse systems in Detroit and Ohio, to internet company founder and venture investor. He has lent his energy to numerous boards spanning the arts, healthcare, and human services. As CEO of the Greater Columbus Chamber of Commerce, Jon witnessed firsthand the powerful relationship between a thriving arts community and sustainable economic development, fueling his desire to support arts in our region. After serving as Program Director for the SLO County Arts Council from 2012 to 2017, Lori is excited to return as a member of the Board of Directors. She is confident that her practical experience with the organization, coupled with her background working in several large marketing agencies in Seattle, as well as running her own firm, can add a unique point of view within the Board as the Council moves forward.

Now retired, Lori is enjoying life on a 10-acre property in Santa Margarita. She is an avid supporter of the arts and the exceptional  artists who make it a reality. She hopes to boost awareness of the county’s artists and programs, as well as provide them with more opportunities to flourish in our community.

  • Rick Castello

    ADVISOR

In Memory of Allen Root

Allen Root, a devoted artist and community leader, passed away on September 18, 2025 at Stanford Medical Center after courageously battling cancer for over a decade.

Allen served as the Board President for SLO County Arts from 2021 to 2025, and committed himself to fostering the local arts community. Those who had the pleasure to meet him at Art After Dark events downtown, or at the famed Mardi Gras parade (he was anointed "King" one year), or while at his studio in Santa Margarita, all knew him to be a masterful storyteller with a deeply sensitive and loving heart.

Allen began his first welding business in 1976, specializing in unique custom metalwork for residences, churches, and commercial spaces. His artistry extended into the public realm, successfully competing in dozens of Public Art Requests for Qualifications across the West. He played a key role in crafting San Luis Obispo’s first Public Art Ordinance and partnered with the City on the care and preservation of its art inventory. Allen’s leadership was also evident through his service on San Luis Obispo’s Architectural Review Commission for many years.

Beyond his professional achievements, Allen was humble, generous, and always helping others to laugh and see the bright side of life. He left every place better than he found it. Allen will be profoundly missed and we will carry him in our hearts forever.
