ADVANCING THE VISUAL, LITERARY & PERFORMING ARTS IN SLO COUNTY

We are the state-local partner of the California Arts Council.

OUR MISSION

The San Luis Obispo County Arts Council empowers artists by providing the resources, advocacy, and networks they need to succeed while connecting cultural institutions to create a dynamic, supportive arts landscape.

Our efforts ensure that local artists are not only able to develop their craft but also have access to paid opportunities, mentorship, and platforms to showcase their work. We understand that a healthy arts community is not just about individual success but about collaboration, mentorship, and mutual support across the region.

Allen Root, a devoted artist and community leader, passed away on September 18, 2025 at Stanford Medical Center after courageously battling cancer for over a decade.

Allen served as the Board President for SLO County Arts for the past four years, and committed himself to fostering the local arts community. Those who had the pleasure to meet him at Art After Dark events downtown, or at the famed Mardi Gras parade (he was anointed "King" one year), or while at his studio in Santa Margarita, all knew him to be a masterful storyteller with a deeply sensitive and loving heart.

Allen began his first welding business in 1976, specializing in unique custom metalwork for residences, churches, and commercial spaces. His artistry extended into the public realm, successfully competing in dozens of Public Art Requests for Qualifications across the West. He played a key role in crafting San Luis Obispo’s first Public Art Ordinance and partnered with the City on the care and preservation of its art inventory. Allen’s leadership was also evident through his service on San Luis Obispo’s Architectural Review Commission for many years.

Beyond his professional achievements, Allen was humble, generous, and always helping others to laugh and see the bright side of life. He left every place better than he found it. Allen will be profoundly missed and we will carry him in our hearts forever.

The Economic Impact of Arts and Culture in SLO County

SLO County Arts just released a countywide study measuring the financial, employment, and tourism benefits of the arts and culture sector in San Luis Obispo County. This is the first time in 10 years that a report on the contributions of art and culture to the region’s economy has been commissioned.
